Dawn of the Dead
2004, Strike Entertainment, dir: Zack Snyder
Zack Snyder, who would go on to direct 300 and The Watchmen, is essentially the bizarro-Quentin Tarantino. Where Tarantino embraces his inner schlock and finds mines moments for existential profundity and human insight, Snyder finds a plot and arranges lighting and special effects in such a way to evoke raw human urges. Dawn of the Dead, as well as each of his subsequent feature failures, is a simple mile-a-minute hour and forty minutes filled with various thematic permutations on the subject of flesh. Basically, it’s fun and it has zombies.
